The Nine Noble Virtues
These are the values that guide my life. A list of ideals to which all can aspire, each brief definition is followed by an example of how that virtue can translate into action in our lives.
"If it is not right, don't do it. If it is not true, don't say it." ~ Marcus Aurelius
Hospitality - Also known as courtesy, hospitality is to be generous, kind, and loyal to those who enter your house, or with whom you have dealings. We treat our fellows fairly and are willing to share what we have.
Courage - Courage is the mental state that impels an individual to accomplish some endeavor, defend others, or do what is right, regardless of fear and/or danger. By facing life's struggles with courage, we constantly extend our capabilities.
Truth - Truth is acknowledgement, acceptance, and promotion of what IS. Avoiding blind faith compels us to act in the world as we see it, and as it really is.
Fidelity - Fidelity is the unwavering commitment to the well-being of those worthy of our loyalty. We value loyalty as the basis for all enduring human activity.
Perseverance – Perseverance is the drive that, regardless of obstacles or failures, compels us to see tasks through to completion and accomplish a goal or endeavor. We hold to our chosen path, un-ashamed to be strong.
Honor – Honor is the expression of self-esteem by an individual, demonstrated by the keeping of promises, the performance of duties, and the respect of other people’s value and possessions. We insist on acting with nobility rather than baseness.
Self Reliance – Self-reliance is the ability and desire to provide for ones self. We depend on our own strength and character to achieve our goals.
Industriousness – Industriousness is the willingness to provide for ones’ self and ones’ family by labor and effort. We work hard, take risks, and refuse to be mere spectators in life.
Discipline – Also described as “self-mastery,” discipline is the inner motivation an individual uses to accomplish goals. We exercise self-control and employ the steadfast effort necessary to fulfill our purpose.
